MISSION TO INDIA - 2004

In January, 2004, I accompanied my friend and photographer Wayne Schoenfeld on a trip to the town of Karaikal in Tamilnadu, Southeast India to document the work of Rotaplast Intl. Being witness to this medical mission, treating children with cleft lip and facial deformities, was a life-changing experience for me and everyone involved. My account, written from the field and published daily on the web before the word "blog" even existed, has a raw, unedited urgency and immediacy made all the more powerful by Schoenfeld's photos. Later published as a book (which we brought back to Karaikal in 2005), Mission To India: Portrait of a Volunteer Surgical Team in Action (Great Circle Books), this extraordinary experience -- in a beautiful place that a few months later was later transformed forever by the terrible tsunami -- is captured here: http://www.mediatekla.com/india
