In January, 2004, I accompanied my friend and photographer Wayne Schoenfeld on a trip to the town of Karaikal in Tamilnadu, Southeast India to document the work of Rotaplast Intl. Being witness to this medical mission, treating children with cleft lip and facial deformities, was a life-changing experience for me and everyone involved. My account, written from the field and published daily on the web before the word "blog" even existed, has a raw, unedited urgency and immediacy made all the more powerful by Schoenfeld's photos.
